One of the most common forms of treatment for patients experiencing a chronic illness is prescription medication. Those most likely to need medications to control chronic health conditions, the majority of older and disabled individuals, often cannot afford them. Medicare does not cover prescription medication unless the recipient elects a Medicare HMO coverage that provides medication at reduced prices through a co-pay arrangement. Medicaid provides prescription medications limited by a formulary that is approved by the legislature.
Over 175 national and international pharmaceutical companies offer indigent drug programs. These programs provide a wide range of prescription medications that may be ordered and dispensed by a physician to low income individuals who meet the company's eligibility standards. Eligibility requirements differ from company to company.
Due to administrative constraints, many programs have been curtailed. Prescription Assistance Medical Services (PAMS) is the pioneer program created by the Gadsden Community Health Council to aid individuals in acquiring necessary prescription medications.
Two press releases on the PAMS program have been issued to local media and visits are underway to local churches to promote the program. The program is doing well and several patients have successfully completed the PAMS process and have received their medications |
